Having a pet can make coming home so much more enjoyable. The excitement of seeing them at the end of the day and knowing that they are just as excited to see you. And in these summer months there’s no better feeling than taking your four-legged friend on an adventure whether it be hiking or the beach or even just a walk through the park. And while we all know that these little bundles of joy bring so much light to our lives, did you know that they also have numerous health benefits?

As early as the 19th century pets have been used with wounded soldiers to speed up the healing process by Florence Nightingale. Even today it has been seen that heart attack patients recover faster and live longer if they have pets at home. Pets also allow for the release of the cuddle hormone, Oxytocin, which lowers blood pressure. In a test conducted at Azabu University in Japan both male and female dog owners experienced a 300% increase in the hormone. This reduces overall levels of stress which helps the heart stay healthy. The American Heart Association says owning a pet reduces the risk of heart disease and helps lower cholesterol levels. This is partially attributed to the fact that people with pets tend to walk more and be more active.

Not only do pets have massive physical benefits they also have mental health benefits. They can help to alleviate feelings of loneliness and depression. They allow their owners to slow down and experience things in the moment. If you’ve ever been in a down mood and your pet came around at least you knew that you were not alone. They can provide companionship in our toughest moments as well as allowing us to see that things aren’t as bad as they may seem.

Now when you go home to your furry family members you can thank them not only for being your companions but also for improving your health! As well as jumpstarting your health by visiting Carolina Heart and Leg Center!
