Blood clots are a natural phenomenon in a healthy body called coagulation. Platelets and plasma in the blood stream interact to form a clot over an injury to a blood vessel, stopping bleeding. Once the damage to the vessel is healed, the body will safely dissolve the blood clot.

However, sometimes the clot does not properly dissolve or a clot forms on the inside of an undamaged blood vessel.

Clots can form in any vein, a low-pressure vessel that carries deoxygenated blood back from the organs to the heart to be oxygenated from the lungs. A clot that forms in a vein restricts blood flow. Blood gathers around the clot creating pain and swelling. This becomes dangerous when a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) forms a clot in a major vein, typical in the legs, but can also occur in the arms, pelvis or another large vein.

When a clot dislodges from one of these large veins, it travels through the circulatory system and can become lodged in the heart, brain, kidneys, and lungs. The clot causes inadequate or blocked blood flow and causes dangerous events such as pulmonary embolisms, heart attacks, strokes or other damage to the body’s organs.

In this way, blood clots can be dangerous and require correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment from a physician. Carolina Heart and Leg, PA offers risk assessments, diagnoses and treatments for blood clots, including Echocardiograms, Electrocardiograms, and ultrasounds, and should be the first stop for anyone with increased risk factors, especially if experiencing pain or swelling in the legs.
