What are Blood Vessels?

Blood vessels are a centrical part of the circulatory system transporting blood throughout the body. The inside of blood vessels is lined with a thin layer of epithelial cells, allowing blood to flow smoothly through the tubes. Blood vessels vary in size, but the smallest is a mere five micrometers where an average human hair is 17 micrometers. The roadmap of blood vessels throughout the body is extensive. If all the blood vessels in an adult were laid end to end, they would measure 100,000 miles long.

TYPES OF BLOOD VESSELS

Blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the rest of the body are called arteries. They are tough on the outside with a muscular middle layer that assists the heart in transporting blood. Veins carry blood from the body back to the heart for oxygen. Although similar to arteries, veins are not as thick or strong. Unlike arteries, veins have valves that assist in blood flowing in a single direction against gravity. Capillaries connect arteries and veins. Oxygen-rich blood from arteries enters the capillaries. The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide happens in the capillaries. Veins transport the waste-rich blood back to the heart and lungs.
