Strokes are the fifth cause of death and one of the leading causes of disability in America, according to The American Heart Association. A stroke is when a blood vessel carrying nutrients and oxygen to the brain becomes blocked or ruptures, causing brain cells to die. The body functions associated with the damaged part of the brain are no longer able to function correctly.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF A STROKE?

The American Heart Association uses the acronym F.A.S.T. to detect signs of a stroke.

  1. Face Drooping: Ask for a smile. One side of the person’s face may be lopsided or numb.
  2. Arm Weakness: Ask the person to lift both arms. One arm may drift down and be weak or numb.
  3. Speech Difficulty: Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Speech may be slurred or difficult to understand.
  4. Time to Call 911: If someone is experiencing these symptoms, even if they go away, call 911 immediately. Make a note of when the first symptoms appeared. Other sudden symptoms include confusion, numbness or weakness on one side of the body, loss of coordination, a sudden headache with no cause and trouble seeing out of one or both eyes. If you notice any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately. Prevent strokes with an exam with the experienced and caring doctors at Carolina Heart and Leg Center, P.A.
